After last week’s review of some stunning buns from George’s Bakery, I decided this week it would be a great idea to try some cake! Because who doesn’t love cake right?
With watching many of George’s Bakery’s tiktok videos I just couldn’t resist. They sell some incredible looking cakes at both the St Ives and Ely Farmers Markets based near Cambridgeshire if you are lucky to live nearby! For me in Northern Ireland it was postal box bakes again, businesses offer themselves up to a much larger market when offering postal orders. I think a lot of the demand for bakeries that offer delivery in the UK and further is FOMO (fear of missing out), especially for those that manage to gain a large following on the likes of tiktok and Instagram.
The publicity and ‘hype’ stimulates demand, as the majority of time these tasty treats sell out quickly, generally within a few hours if not in some cases minutes. This definitely was part of the reason I ordered again from George’s bakery; it causes you to make a quick decision in the moment whilst staring at tasty food – hard to resist the temptation!
In this case the damage was 4 massive slices of cake for £26. The one issue I find with the assorted boxes is that quite often there will be a flavour or type of cake/bun that you don’t like. This also means when you find a box where you like everything, it seems more like you will miss out as next week this might not be the case. In this box there were four different types of ‘mudslide cake’. I, like I imagine most of you wasn’t sure what mudslide cake was and upon googling I am none the wiser. But I think it is referring to the thick layers of ganache between the layers or icing and sponge.
Once again, the delivery was super-duper quick, and it came nicely packaged with each piece individually wrapped. The boxes are very good quality and keep the baked goods safe inside without getting damaged which impressed me after travelling across the waters. My one issue was it was very tricky getting the slices out of there clear bags without making a mess and the layers falling apart. To get some pictures often required reconstruction. Also compared to the decoration and toppings of the cakes they offer at the farmers markets these ones were slightly disappointing looks-wise. I understand it would be more difficult to transport if there were large decorations on top, but I still think there’s room for improvement compared to the extravagant cakes offered at the market, you kind of feel like you’re missing out.
In this box of cakes, it included 4 different flavours.
Chocolate Mudslide Cake
My Rating 8/10 – The buttercream was delicious; it had a really nice level of both chocolatey-ness and sweetness. The layers of chocolate cake tasted almost like a brownie (it might’ve been) and was rich with a dark chocolate flavour, which was good it just put me off eating too much of it! It was also a lovely and moist cake. Lastly personally I found the thick layers of ganache tasted like an extremely rich chocolate mousse and for me was just too rich.
Mum’s Rating 9/10 – “it was very rich and delicious”
Friend 1’s Rating 7/10 - "good but just too rich to eat much of it at all"
Friend 2’s Rating 7/10 - "it was very rich, but I liked that"
Kinder Mudslide Cake
My Rating 6.5/10 – it was lovely a moist but had much less flavour than the other cakes. The only reason I know this is the kinder cake was process of elimination, I really couldn’t taste the kinder flavour that it should’ve had. But it was really good anyway but just didn’t live up to expectations.
Mum’s Rating 8/10 – “not as flavoursome”
Friend 1’s Rating 7/10 – "couldn't really tell it was kinder which was dissappointing as it is one of my favourite chocolates".
Friend 2’s Rating 7/10 - "was nice but felt more like just a vanilla cake and it wasn't as sweet as the others"
White Lindt & Milky bar Mudslide Cake
My Rating 10/10 – Personally this was definitely my favourite, you could really taste the Lindt flavour in the thick creamy ganache and the sponge was moist but still light. The buttercream had a lovely smooth consistency and was really sweet and yummy!
Mum’s Rating 5/10 – “it was too sickly sweet”
Friend 1’s Rating 7/10 – “the milky bar was nice because all the white chocolate flavours complemented each other very well”
Friend 2’s Rating 8/10. - "has a really nice flavour, but not a good sponge to cream ratio"
Biscoff Mudslide Cake
My Rating 7/10 – I am a bit hit and miss for liking biscoff. I used to not be a fan, then became lowkey obsessed with biscoff biscuits, and now I occasionally am in the mood for it. This cake’s ganache was similar if not the same as the chocolate cake. But the sponge had a strong biscoff flavour which tasted good.
Mum’s Rating 7/10 - “bit sweet”
Friend 1’s Rating 5/10 – “too many flavours and alot with the richness of the biscoff”
Friend 2’s Rating 6/10 - "was very basic, not a big fan"
Once again there are no recipes I can offer this time, but stay tuned! I did however find a video on how George's Bakery make their ganache! All of their ganaches were very thick and creamy. I loved them but if I was going to use them in a cake of mine I personally would use smaller layers. Hope you enjoy the recipe!
Overall, I would rate this product a 7/10, the variation of flavours was nice, but I think they could’ve been more of a variety especially in sponge flavour. Also, as much as the ganache is lovely and rich, I do think the layers could do with being slightly thinner as my friends agreed that it’s just too much, and that’s saying something for 3 cake-loving girls. I also think that this was less value for my money compared to last weeks assorted box of bakes. Once you takeaway around a fiver for postage it works out at £5.25 per slice of cake which I find a bit steep. But at the end of the day if you enjoy very rich ganache and enjoy both weaker and stronger flavoured sponges then this would definitely be a good purchase for you!
